Mycoplasmas are the smallest of free-living organisms and are intermediate between viruses and bacteria. Many species thrive as parasites in animal (including human) hosts. This book is based on proceedings of a conference held in Palermo, Italy. It reviews some of the most important mycoplasma diseases of sheep, goats and cattle including contagious bovine pleuropneumonia, contagious agalactia and calf pneumonia, which are listed by the OIE because of their economic implications.
Part I: Methods
1. In vitro culture of mycoplasmas from ruminants
2. Detection and differentiation of mycoplasmas by PCR/DGGE
3. Detection of mycoplasma using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
4. Molecular typing of mycoplasmas
5. Antigenic analysis of mycoplasmas
6. Antimicrobial sensitivity testing
Part II: Diseases
7. Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia
8. Contagious agalactia.
9. Contagious caprine pleuropneumonia.
10. Bovine respiratory disease
11. Respiratory disease in small ruminants
12. Eye infections of ruminants
13. Reproductive diseases of cattle
14. New, emerging and unculturable mycoplasmas of ruminants
